As the seasons change, so does the way we experience our homes. Winter naturally draws us towards warmer lighting, richer textures and more tactile materials — and fragrance can play just as important a role in creating that sense of atmosphere.
While summer tends to favour citrus, fresh florals and lighter aromatic scents, winter gives us the opportunity to explore something deeper: woods, resins, amber, spice and richer florals.
But choosing a winter fragrance doesn’t necessarily mean filling your home with cinnamon and vanilla. There are several ways to create warmth through scent, depending on the atmosphere you want to achieve.
Here are three fragrance directions we’re particularly drawn to for Winter 2026.
If you prefer fresh fragrances throughout the year, moving towards something very sweet or heavily spiced in winter can feel like quite a departure. A woody aromatic fragrance is a good middle ground. Look for notes such as cypress, cedar, pine, sandalwood and fir, often balanced with herbs, citrus or green notes. These fragrances have depth and warmth but can still retain a sense of freshness. Pine and fir tend to create a greener, more recognisably outdoorsy character. Sandalwood is softer, warmer and creamier. Cypress often sits somewhere between the two, bringing a dry, aromatic quality to a fragrance. When combined well, these notes create a scent that feels grounded and sophisticated rather than overtly seasonal.
Where do woody fragrances work best?
Woody aromatic scents are particularly versatile, making them a good choice for living rooms, entrance halls and studies. They also work beautifully in interiors with natural materials — timber, stone, linen, leather and earthy colours — where the fragrance can reinforce the overall character of the room.
A scent to try: Figue Cyprès by Ladenac Milano – Figue Cyprès is an interesting example because it combines cypress, Scots pine, sandalwood, incense and fir balsam with fig leaf, bergamot and Mediterranean herbs including rosemary and thyme. The result demonstrates exactly why woody doesn’t necessarily mean heavy. There is warmth and depth underneath, but the fig, herbs and citrus retain freshness. For a Maltese winter in particular, that balance feels very appropriate.
At the richer end of the fragrance spectrum are scents built around oud, amber, woods and spice.
These tend to create a much more enveloping atmosphere.
Oud has a particularly distinctive character. Derived from agarwood, it can smell woody, resinous, smoky and sometimes slightly sweet. In home fragrance, it is often softened or complemented with sandalwood, patchouli, vanilla, florals or spice.
These are fragrances that tend to have presence.
That makes winter an ideal time to explore them. During longer evenings, a deeper fragrance can contribute to the same sense of warmth that we create through softer lighting, heavier fabrics and layered textures.
Where do richer fragrances work best?
These scents are particularly effective in living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas, especially in the evening.
They can, however, become overwhelming in a small space. With deeper fragrance profiles, more isn’t necessarily better.
Think of them in the same way you might think about a strong colour in an interior: used thoughtfully, they add considerable depth.
A scent to try: Monoi Oud by Ladenac Milano. Monoi Oud layers an oud accord with guaiac wood, patchouli and sandalwood, but introduces a very different dimension through tiare, jasmine, ylang-ylang and coconut. Clove, pepper and saffron provide further warmth. It is a useful example of how an oud fragrance doesn’t have to smell purely dark or smoky. Floral and exotic notes can soften the woods and create something considerably more nuanced.
